Hunter Education is a mandatory course designed for novice or young hunters, ages 9 years and above.

The course covers the core competencies of a firearm, hunting, and outdoor safety, hunting ethics, hunting responsibilities, and wildlife conservation. All materials are provided and subjects are covered to enable the student to successfully complete the Hunter Education certification process. The Basic Hunter Education Course lasts a maximum of 6 hours of classroom instruction.

Who needs to take Hunter Education?

Every hunter (including out-of-state hunters) born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, must successfully complete hunter education. The minimum age for certification is 9 years.

If you were born on or after September 2, 1971 and you are:

• under 9 years of age, you must be accompanied.
• age 9 through 16, you must successfully complete hunter education, OR you must be accompanied.
• age 17 and over, you must successfully complete hunter education; OR purchase a “Hunter Education Deferral,” and you must be accompanied.

Course is only $15 + $1 processing fee per person. 

If the student is under the age of 18,  must be accompanied by a parent and parents must remain at the range area. Parents are welcome to stay in the classroom as well; however, seating priority will be given to students. Students are welcome to bring snacks, and snacks are also available for purchase at the range. Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately for the course, such as wearing camo, safety orange, or other outdoor-appropriate attire. If time and weather permit, a portion of the course may take place in the field, including live-fire activities.Pre-registration is required and EACH student must use an individual email address.

What to bring:

• Rifle .22 caliber only (If you have one)
• 50 rounds of .22 ammunition (ammo can be purchased at the range)
• Eye and ear protection
• Hat
• Sunscreen/bug spray
• Drinks/snacks 

Students must pass the written exam and get at least 75% correct to pass.
